Who is Julie?
Hello! My name is Julie Sherlock, and I am a vocal and general music teacher at Baldwin Elementary School in Baldwin, Michigan. I received my Bachelor of Music from Wayne State University in 2005, and have pursued additional graduate studies in music, humanities and English language arts at VanderCook College of Music, Ferris State University, and Delta State University. With a keen interest in diversity and multicultural music education, I currently teach twice weekly general music, drumming, ukulele, choir and band classes to approximately 275 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. I founded and direct a 55-voice children’s choir, and a world music drumming ensemble, both of which perform throughout the community. I sit on my school’s Positive Behavioral Support committee and am active in arts advocacy throughout the region.
The mother of three adult children and two stepdaughters, I live in Ludington, Michigan with my husband Barry, and I am passionately active in area arts activities, traveling (of course!) cooking, and the outdoors. In addition to my career in elementary music education, I teach adult and child drumming and ukulele workshops and perform as a musician.
In 2016, I was honored and delighted to be chosen as a fellow in the Teachers for Global Classrooms program. Funded by IREX, a non-profit organization committed to international education and development, and the the U.S Department of State, The Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (TGC) is a year-long, fully funded professional development opportunity for US teachers to become leaders in global education. Because global education is integral to building 21st century skills, and teachers are the greatest facilitators of this, TGC equips teachers to bring an international perspective to their schools through targeted training, experience abroad, and global collaboration.
My primary objectives for participating in Teachers for Global Classrooms are to continue building upon my desire to blend music education with global awareness and education and to be able to deliver this new knowledge and strategies for incorporating it into curricula for student and professional communities.
